When it comes to romantic getaways with your significant other, you might think of a romantic city like Paris, France, off the top of your head. But Lorena Petani, an expert in Site Finder and photographer, says her state of Illinois is a great starting point for a romantic loop from Chicago and back.
There’s no need to leave the country at all to take in some beautiful sights, which is perfect for convenience and spontaneity.
The first stop is in Sheboygan, WI, where you’ll spend some quality time in Kohler-Andrae State Park. You’ll take in beautiful views of Lake Michigan from a cord walk, while also enjoying some time on the beach. The park also offers up other things perfect for couples such as bicycling, canoeing, camping, and evening horseback riding.
Take in Some History — and Ice Cream
From there you’ll continue your journey to Manitowoc, WI, a quaint little historic town complete with a cute ice cream stop and an interesting mural across some silos. From this location you’ll board a ferry in your vehicle at the SS Badger Car Ferry Dock, which is a relaxing and interesting experience across Lake Michigan, says Lorena Petani. There’s even live entertainment and dining on board the ferry — the last coal-fired passenger ship left in the country — making it even more special of an experience.
The SS Badger will take you to Ludington, MI, another historic town that offers up some of the best opportunities in the state to soak up some sun. Extend your stay overnight by renting one of the quaint cabins near the small inland lakes near the town.
Get Your Hearts Racing — in Dune Buggies
Also, along the Michigan shorelines is Silver Lake State Park, a perfect spot for some competitive fun in rented dune buggies. There’s also a racetrack nearby where you can watch modified buggies compete, with amazing speeds that can reach almost 140 mph within seconds.
The state park itself boasts more than 3,000 acres, along with over four miles of pristine lake shoreline to walk hand-in-hand. The area also offers great hiking, modern restrooms, and a picnic shelter among its other amenities.
While you’re in the vicinity of the park, be sure to take in Little Sable Point Lighthouse, which has a long and storied history of its own. You can also take tours of the lighthouse, where you’ll get breathtaking views of the Lake Michigan shorelines and the sand dunes.
An Ideal Romantic Getaway Near Home, Says Lorena Petani
This is a great getaway that offers a lot of variety for couples and it won’t cost you a lot of money or time, explains Lorena Petani. You can choose to extend your stay at many of the stops overnight to truly experience everything they have to offer! You’ll be sure to find a renewed connection while taking in the natural beauty and fun experiences along the way.
